People have been customizing their cars for nearly as long as the automobile has been part of our lives. By the late 1920s, America car lovers began modifying by removing running boards and either removing fenders, or replacing them with bicycle fenders. You can still see this type of modification at hot rod shows. Just look for the early 1930s-era cars and you’ll see these same mods in practice today.

Around the time, the hot rod culture started taking off. Soon gearheads started getting more creative with their custom bodywork, such as altering suspension, lowering the roof, and “shaving” the door handles. By the 1950s, shadetree mechanics were souping up their engines. Some went as far as swapping out original engines for other, more powerful ones. This is about the time custom paint jobs became popular, too. Candy-apple red, orange flames, and brilliant turquoise all turned heads at Friday night cruises all over the country.

As the car industry evolved, so did customizations. After big fenders and tailfins went out of style in the 1960s, the muscle car movement began. Over time, many different car subcultures popped up, such as low riders, rat rods, and more.

We specialize in a modern vehicle customization known as donk cars. This is a modification to a car that generally includes large rims, lift kits, and striking paint jobs. If you’re looking to put on 22-inch rims on your car, you’ll most likely have to order a special kit so that they fit properly and allow you to safely operate your vehicle. That’s where we come in. At Liftabrand, we specialize in donk lift kit technology. All of our kits are carefully engineered and manufactured at our shop in Minnesota. Whether you have a 1976 Chevy Caprice or a 2014 Chrysler 300, we have the know-how, inventory, and experience to find the perfect kit for your car.

If you’re looking to create a unique ride that’s an expression of who you are, call us today. We look forward to helping you through the process.

Brand New Cadillac https://lifta.mapjin.com/brand-new-cadillac/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:28:13 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1453

In 1979, The Clash took their London-inspired punk rhythms, combined them with a US-rockabilly style, and belted out “Brand New Cadillac.” It has become one of the most iconic songs about automobiles ever recorded.

Actually, The Clash didn’t write the song; Vince Taylor originally penned the 12-bar blues song in 1959. That was a time in American when Cadillac was synonymous with luxury, quality, and having arrived at the good life in years after World War II.

Twenty years later, the British rockers covered the tune. It’s a short song at just over two minutes, but the piece contains all of the elements of a 1950s-era rock song (you can almost hear Chuck Berry noodling in the solo riffs). At the same time, it’s tempered with the rough-around-the-edges, high-energy style that characterized the punk movement in the late 1970s.

At Liftabrand, when we hear “Brand New Cadillac” we think about 1979 and how sweet it would be to have a ‘79 Caddie lifted up with new rims. You’ve certainly seen these rides around. In 1979, Cadillac produced nearly 100,000 Sedan de Villes, over 120,000 Coupe de Villes, and 67,000 Eldorados. Other cars made that year include the Seville, the Fleetwood Brougham, and the rare Series 75, of which fewer than 3,000 cars rolled off the assembly line.

We’ve made custom donk kits for all kinds of Cadillacs. Our passion for cars goes beyond making them look great. We also strive to engineer the strongest, most economical lift kits on the market. Whether you have a Cadillac you’re looking to transform into a truly unique ride, or you have just about any other type of vehicle you want to deck out, contact us and get started on customizing your ride.

You Need Brake Dust Covers https://lifta.mapjin.com/you-need-brake-dust-covers/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:27:57 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1450

Brake dust is a byproduct of brake wear. When you use your brakes, they heat up and metallic particles are worn off. As these particles are shed, they gain a static charge – which is how they end up sticking on your wheels. Both steel and alloy rims are affected by these unsightly dark blemishes.

If you’ve ever tried to clean brake dust from your wheels, you know how difficult it is. You’ll break a sweat, for sure, and it’s backbreaking work. Of course, you can simply leave the brake dust on, but there is a chance that the dust could become corrosive. Depending on how your brake pads were manufactured, you run the risk of corroding the aluminum in your wheels – and that damage can be permanent.

Custom Brake Dust Covers

We know you care about your ride. That’s why we offer a full line of brake dust covers for just about any make and model of car. These covers, also called brake dust shields, are a great way to protect the brake mechanism from road debris, conceal rusty brake components, and prevent that nasty brake dust from soiling your wheels.

With our custom brake dust covers, you’ll never have to worry about getting on your hands and knees to clean your wheels. You can easily clean the covers using only water.

If you’re going through the trouble to turn your ride into a donk, you’ll want to pick up a set of brake dust covers. We offer standard and custom covers for wheels of almost any size. If you’re not sure of what kind of brake dust cover you need, call us today and we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect fit.

What Is a Donk? https://lifta.mapjin.com/what-is-a-donk/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:27:13 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1447

A true “donk” car refers specifically to 1971-1976 full-size Chevrolet cars. The term “donk” actually comes from the Chevy Impala. During these years, the Impala had a special logo that featured a leaping African antelope. To many, this jumping creature resembled a donkey, so when this particular Chevy model started gaining traction in the custom-car industry, people started referring to them as “donks.”

Of ourse, donk culture has grown over the past twenty years to include just about any vehicle you can think of. While the 1970s-era cruisers remain popular – they make up around 70 percent of the donks you’ll see on the road – many other makes, models, and years of cars have found owners to modify the vehicles’ suspensions, brakes, and one some even the body panels.

Donk Lift Kits, Sweet Rims, Sweeter Paint

Donk cars sit on a suspension lift kit. Some lifts are as little as two or three inches over factory ride height. Other cars might sit three feet higher in the air than they did before modification. Generally, the higher the ride, the bigger the rims. We work with all kinds of rims, from 20 and 22-inch spinners to massive 32-inch rims that look like they should be on a monster truck. When a car is jacked up high over its original cruising height, it’s known as a “hi riser” or “skyscraper.”

Whichever kind of car you have, it’s likely that it wasn’t designed to ride on the massive wheels that make donk cars so special. That’s why you have to make major customizations to the vehicle before you can slap on those sweet rims. The first necessity is a lift kit. The donk lift kit alters your suspension and brake systems so those huge wheels will fit under the car. In some cases, owners will also widen the fender flares, too.

In addition to the lift kit and rims, a major donk trend over the last two decades is to have the most outrageous, wildest, coolest paint job around. Just walk around a gathering of donk enthusiasts and you’ll see tremendous creativity both on the wheels and with the paint.

When you’re ready to put together your donk car, give us a call. We offer a full line of donk lift kits for most makes and models. And if we don’t have it, we’ll make it to your car’s specs. Get started on your creative ride by getting in touch with us today.

Lift Kits for Serious Donks https://lifta.mapjin.com/lift-kits-for-serious-donks/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:27:02 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1448

Are you looking to create a serious donk? Then you’ll need a few things. First, you’ll need a car. The classic donks are 1970s-era Impalas, Caprices, and Monte Carlos. Because cars’ shapes have changed over the years, some people call 1980s-era cars “boxes” due to their hard edges and boxy appearance. In the 1990s, designs softened a bit, with much more rounded corners. Many people refer to cars of this era as “bubbles.”

Whatever you call it, once you have the car, you’ll need some big wheels. Many folks like installing a custom audio system. Regardless, you’ll need a donk lift kit so that those new rims will fit. It’s like giving your car a raise (literally)!

In order to create a donk, you need to raise the car’s suspension. Some people use truck lift kits, but we don’t recommend it. After all, you’re not building Bigfoot, you’re making a low-riding car a high-riding machine.

Custom Donk Lift Kits

Our custom lift kits are engineered to fit your vehicle’s specifications. This makes for easier installation, a smoother ride, and safer handling. Your new wheels will fit perfectly, and look great. Plus, the new, higher stance looks awesome.

Some of the components of the donk lift kits include cups, shocks, brake dust covers, front control arms, and rear trailing arms. We make them to fit just about any car known to man, so if you have a Caprice, Cutlass, Eldorado, Riviera, Skylark, Towncar or anything else, let us know. We have the perfect custom solution for you. And if we don’t currently have it, we’ll make it in our machine shop in Minnesota. So get your ride, your rims, and a lift kit to fit those 20 inch, 22 inch, 24 inch, or bigger donk rims. Contact us today to get started.

Why We Love Donks https://lifta.mapjin.com/why-we-love-donks/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:25:15 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1445

We love the creativity that comes with customizing cars. Donk cars are great for car lovers who want to create something that reflects the owner’s personality and tastes. Making a donk car is also an act of preservation. Many cars that become donks start out as old, beat-up cars near the end of their life cycle. Because donk building involves reworking your suspension, brakes, and running gear, there is a lot of most donk owners take the next step and restore the body, add a custom paint job, and generally polish the vehicle until it looks like a completely new ride.

After all that elbow grease (and literal grease), the end result is a transformed classic coupe, sedan, or convertible that has not only been saved from the junkyard, but is now a rolling work of art.

Because donks are impractical as daily drivers, once the car is restored, it tends to remain in good condition for a long time. You won’t find many custom donk cars with rusty bodies or faded paint on donk cars. Owners like to keep their rides looking great.

Go check out a gathering of donk enthusiasts. You’ll find that this crowd doesn’t take themselves too seriously, but they do enjoy getting wild and crazy with their donks. What they do take seriously, however, is how their cars look, and making people smile. That’s why we love donk culture.

If you’re looking to create a donk car all of your own, we have the perfect solution for you. We have a full stock of complete lift kits for all kinds of cars, including the traditional Caprice donks, Buick Rivieras, Cadillac ElDorados, and more. In fact, if we don’t have a kit ready for your specific make and model, we’ll engineer one for you. Give us a call today and get started on transforming your ride.

Do It Yourself: How to donk my ride https://lifta.mapjin.com/do-it-yourself-how-to-donk-my-ride/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:24:46 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1443

The term Donk used to refer to solely to a highly customized Mid-70s Chevrolet Impala and then any American-made full-size car from that period. But nowadays, any car on large custom wheels falls into the “Donk” category.

As the popularity of Donks continue to explode, car enthusiasts everywhere are turning to do-it-yourself solutions to Donk their rides. And with the availability of full Donk kits, it is easier than ever to transform your ride into a legitimate Donk. Here’s how:

Know what you want

Custom Donk kits are custom designed for you. Lifts range anywhere from 3 inch above factory default to several feet. The higher the rise, the bigger the rims, typically.

Determine what size rims you want. In the Donk world, the bigger the better. Cars raised high over the manufacturer’s standard cruising height are sometimes called “skyscrapers.” This is typically done for show purposes only. If you plan to use your Donk as a daily driver, it may be smart to consider a lower option.

Purchase a Donk Kit from a trusted supplier

Our Donk kits come with everything you need to Donk your ride, eliminating the need to do any custom work on your car. These kits offer no cut, no rub solutions with full U-turn clearance on rims up to 32 inches.

Depending on the year, make and model of your car, Donk kits are designed to provide a maximum lift to your vehicle with as little custom work as possible on your end.

A little bit of Donk know-how

First, know if your car can be turned into a Donk by using our Find My Ride feature. Almost any full size American made car will work.

Full Donk kits come with everything you need to properly lift your vehicle, including extended spindles with brake upgrade, spring re-locators, extended rear trailing arms and transmission drop hardware extended lift shocks. While this makes the job incredibly easy, a little know-how is still required.

And most importantly, the kits are fabricated to your specific vehicle’s specifications.

The paint job is also important to a Donk and we try and build the cross member to your vehicle’s theme if possible.

For more information on how to Donk your ride yourself, or to get more information on our services, call us today at 877.995.4382. Our professional, knowledgeable staff is here to answer any Donk related questions or concerns you may have.

Donk, Box or Bubble? https://lifta.mapjin.com/donk-box-or-bubble/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 15:14:06 +0000 https://lifta.mapjin.com/?p=1426

When you hear the term “donk”, chances are your mind brings up images of older custom cars outfitted with a lift kit, uniquely fresh paint, custom interior and those quintessential large custom wheels. These days, the term is used to describe just about any lifted car with large alloy wheels — and there are plenty of examples of the newest and latest vehicles receiving the donk car treatment.

Although the term “donk” is widely used among enthusiasts and laypeople alike, there are plenty of distinctions among the many vehicles that are outfitted with lift kits and those spectacular alloy wheels. The following talks about the three most common types of donk cars — also known as “hi-risers” — and the many things that set each type of vehicle apart from the others.

Donk

The 1971-1976 Chevrolet Impala epitomizes the quintessential donk car. After all, it’s the car that originally earned the “donk” name. The term itself comes from the Impala symbol being referred to as a “donkey” by hi-riser owners. The terms popularity eventually spread to other cars made throughout the 1960s and 1970s, eventually making it a universal name among fans.

Box

Box cars are another type of donk car. The term usually refers to the 1977-1990 General Motors vehicles based on the rear-wheel drive B, C and D platforms, along with the G-body personal luxury coupes. However, the term can be used to describe just about any boxy late 1970s or 1980s vehicle that’s been given the donk treatment. Classic examples include the 1980s Oldsmobile Cutlass coupes and 1980s Chevrolet Caprice Classics.

Bubble

“Bubble” cars typically refer to the 1991-1996 Chevrolet Caprice, although the similar Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Fleetwood of that era also apply. The much more rounded appearance of these cars is what helped them earn their “bubble” nickname, especially in the case of the Caprice. The term can also be loosely applied to other similarly styled vehicles that were produced throughout the 1990s.

What About Other Vehicles?

Just because a vehicle doesn’t fit into any of the above categories doesn’t make it any less of a donk. In fact, a wide variety of newer vehicles are simply called donk cars with little distinction given to their body style or era. Popular cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Charger have all been turned into donk cars by their owners, showing just how popular donk culture has grown throughout the past few years.

If you’re ready to give your car the donk treatment, don’t hesitate to call us. We carry a wide variety of donk lift kits for many popular makes and models. We can even create custom donk kits for your particular vehicle.
